...yeah...there are...like...A LOT of shounen-ai/yaoi stuff on Death Note, esp. of Light+L...personally I find those unacceptable. I'm not against shounen-ai/light yaoi at all, it's just...how could they make L AND LIGHT together?! I just can't see them together...NOOO >_< I absolutely refuse to see L that way!

Death Note is REALLY, REALLY good, if you're into psychological warfare. It's not fantasy (despite the obviously fantastic Death Note+Shinigamis), but rather "realistic" instead. What's it about...well...it's complicated...

one day Yagami Light (Raito) picks up an ordinary notebook that contains instructions on "how to kill people". Thinking it is a joke he tries it out, only to find that it's real. A Shinigami (Death God) appears, saying that he's the owner of the DN, but since it fell to human ground and was picked up by an human, it now belongs to Light. With this in hand Light is scheming to rid the world of "evil people" and become the God of the new world...then arises a certain "L" (he's my favourite character of manga right now, without being a bishounen...you'll know why once you read it ^^) who vows to catch "Kira" (who is responsible for all the killings...i.e. Light) and deliver him to the death row. And their epic battle begins, as each vows to outwit the other...

bah, really bad summery there, I'm not good at doing these things @@ but it's a REALLy good story, and it should be really easy to find it online, so i do recommand you to read it ^^
